National Health Insurance Service for Foreign Students


1. National Health Insurance Service (NHIS)


In accordance with National Health Insurance Act Article 109 of South Korea, all foreign students residing in Korea must hold the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) membership as local subscribers from March 2021. Those who entered Korea after 16th July 2019 and applied for D-2 visa should have another insurance equivalent to NHIS and change its insurance type to the NHIS membership from 1st March 2021. All GIT students residing in Korea must submit the copy of insurance certificate to the GIT Office for the annual report to the Korean Ministry of Education.


2. Eligibility


From 1st March 2021, all foreigners with a student visa (D-2) or marriage (F-6) visa are eligible for the NHIS membership when they entered to Korea and make the alien registration card. Other foreigners or overseas Korean are asked to have stayed in Korea more than 6 months to be eligible.


Once a foreign resident has National Health Insurance membership, the resident's spouse and their children under the age of 19 years can receive the same benefit from the NHIC.


- The scope of family members: Spouse and minor children (aged under 19)

- The residential address of the family members’ in Korea must be same as yours.


3. Required Documents


For the membership application, please visit the nearest NHIS office (customer service for foreigners) for subscription. For more information, please visit the NHIS website (www.nhic.or.kr)


For D-2 visa holder:


- Passport

- Alien Registration Card

- Certificate of Residence or Housing Contract

- Certificate of Enrollment


4. Notice


Please submit a copy of insurance certificate to the GIT Office (as for NHIS, the certificate is called “건강보험자격득실확인서” in Korean). All GIT students are required to apply for a health insurance and submit the insurance certificate within 90 days after their matriculation.


From 1st March 2021, all foreign students with D-2 visa have to hold the NHIS membership and submit the confirmation of membership(건강보험자격득실확인서) to the GIT Office.

5. Others


- Foreigners forfeit their health insurance membership if they travel outside Korea and fail to pay the monthly fee.

- Student (D-2) Visa holders can receive a 50% reduction of the premium from the average of Korean regional membership holders.

- Every hospital in Korea accommodates people registered mainly with the NHIC membership.
